Deutsch — Accusative vs dative object

Some verbs take two objects at once. In Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch, dem Kind is the dative (the receiver, wem?) and das Buch is the accusative (the thing, was?). Verbs like geben, zeigen and schenken follow this pattern.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The dative marks the person who receives (wem?), the accusative marks the thing that is given (was?). When both are nouns, the dative usually comes first: Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch, Er zeigt der Frau den Weg, Sie schenkt dem Freund eine Uhr.

2

Examples

wem (dative) + was (accusative) with two-object verbs
Sentence wem? (dative) → was? (accusative)
Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch. dem Kind → das Buch
Er zeigt der Frau den Weg. der Frau → den Weg
Sie schenkt dem Freund eine Uhr. dem Freund → eine Uhr
Wir geben den Gästen den Schlüssel. den Gästen → den Schlüssel
Ich schreibe meiner Mutter einen Brief. meiner Mutter → einen Brief
Der Kellner bringt dem Gast die Rechnung. dem Gast → die Rechnung

Good to know

⚠ Note

The order flips when the accusative is a pronoun: it then comes before the dative. So Ich gebe dem Kind das Buch becomes Ich gebe es dem Kind — not Ich gebe dem Kind es. A pronoun object moves to the front.
