Français — Participle agreement of pronominal verbs

With pronominal verbs conjugated with être, the past participle agrees only when the reflexive pronoun is the direct object: elle s'est lavée. If it is an indirect object, there is no agreement: elle s'est lavé les mains.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The participle agrees in gender and number with the reflexive pronoun when that pronoun is the direct object of the verb — elle s'est lavée (she washed herself). When the direct object is a separate noun placed after the verb, the reflexive is only the indirect object and the participle stays invariable — elle s'est lavé les mains (she washed her hands).

Examples

Direct object → agreement, indirect object → no agreement
Sentence Role of «se» Agreement
elle s'est lavée direct object agreement (‑e)
elle s'est lavé les mains indirect object no agreement
elles se sont vues direct object agreement (‑es)
ils se sont parlé indirect object (parler à qqn) no agreement
nous nous sommes écrit indirect object (écrire à qqn) no agreement
elle s'est coupé le doigt indirect object no agreement
les mains qu'elle s'est lavées preceding direct object agreement (‑es)

Good to know

⚠ Note

Watch the verbs built on à: se parler, se téléphoner, s'écrire, se nuire. Their «se» is always the indirect object, so they never agree — write ils se sont parlé, not parlés. Conversely, a direct object placed before the verb triggers agreement even when a noun follows nowhere: les mains qu'elle s'est lavées.
