Deutsch — als vs. wenn vs. wann
Three German words all touch on "when", but they are not interchangeable. Use als for a single event in the past, wenn for repeated or conditional situations, and wann only to ask about a time.
How it works
als marks one completed event in the past: Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Berlin. wenn covers a repeated past habit (often with immer), a present rule, or a future condition: Immer wenn es regnete, blieben wir zu Hause and Wenn du Zeit hast, ruf mich an. wann is a question word for a point in time, in direct and indirect questions: Wann kommt der Zug? / Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.
Examples
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| als | single event in the past | Als ich acht war, lernte ich schwimmen. |
| als | one moment when something happened | Als der Film begann, wurde es still. |
| wann | direct question about a time | Wann beginnt der Film? |
| wann | indirect question about a time | Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt. |
Good to know
The classic mistake is using wenn for a single past event. Wenn ich klein war is wrong; it must be Als ich klein war. Rule of thumb: for one past moment use als, for everything repeated or conditional use wenn, and reserve wann for questions — never say Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt.
