Deutsch — als ob / als

Unreal comparisons: "as if" someone were doing something that is not actually true. German uses als ob, als wenn, or bare als with Konjunktiv II — for example Er tut, als ob er schliefe ("He acts as if he were sleeping", but he is awake).

How it works

✓ Rule

With als ob and als wenn the conjugated verb goes to the end of the clause: Sie sieht aus, als ob sie krank wäre. With bare als the verb comes right after als, in second position: Sie sieht aus, als wäre sie krank. Both mean the same; the verb is in Konjunktiv II (wäre, hätte, käme, schliefe) — or würde + infinitive when the pure form is unusual: als ob er tanzen würde.

Examples

Good to know

⚠ Note

The verb never comes second after als ob — als ob er schläft is wrong; it must be als ob er schliefe (verb at the end). And do not add ob to the verb-second pattern: it is als wäre sie krank, never als ob wäre sie krank. For a past, already-unreal comparison use Konjunktiv II of the perfect: Er tat, als ob er nichts gehört hätte / als hätte er nichts gehört.
