Polski — verb aspect

Most Polish verbs come in pairs: an imperfective form (robić) for a process or a repeated action, and a perfective form (zrobić) for a single, finished action with a result.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The imperfective has a present tense and a compound future (będę robić). The perfective has no present at all: its present-looking forms express the future — zrobię means "I will do / finish".

Examples

Aspect pairs
Imperfective Perfective Meaning
robić zrobić to do
czytać przeczytać to read
pisać napisać to write
kupować kupić to buy

Good to know

⚠ Note

Choose the imperfective for a habit or an ongoing process, the perfective for one finished action. Only the imperfective forms the być-future (będę czytać); the perfective's present-looking form is already the future (przeczytam = "I will read it through").
