Polski — aspect in the past tense

In the past tense the choice of aspect changes the meaning: the imperfective (robiłem, czytałem) shows a process or a repeated action, while the perfective (zrobiłem, przeczytałem) shows a single, completed action with a result.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Use the imperfective past for a process or a habit — Wczoraj czytałem książkę (I was reading, the process); use the perfective past for one finished action with a result — Wczoraj przeczytałem książkę (I read it to the end).

2

Examples

Imperfective vs perfective in the past
Imperfective (process/repetition) Perfective (completed result)
robiłem zrobiłem
czytałem przeczytałem
pisałem list napisałem list
uczyłem się nauczyłem się
jadłem obiad zjadłem obiad
oglądałem film obejrzałem film

Good to know

⚠ Note

The perfective has no present tense: its past-like form (zrobię) means the future, not the past. So a completed past action needs the perfective past (zrobiłem), never *jestem zrobiłem — Polish has no compound perfect.
