Polski — Aspect in the future tense
Polish has two ways to talk about the future, chosen by aspect. Imperfective verbs build a compound future with będę plus the infinitive or the past l-form (będę robić / będę robił), describing an ongoing or repeated action. Perfective verbs have a single, simple future (zrobię) that presents the action as one whole, completed event.
How it works
The imperfective future is analytic: będę plus infinitive (będę robić) or będę plus the past l-participle agreeing in gender and number (będę robił, będę robiła). Both variants mean the same thing. The perfective future takes the same endings as the present tense but has a future meaning: zrobię, napiszę, przeczytam — one completed action.
Examples
| Meaning | Imperfective (compound future) | Perfective (simple future) |
|---|---|---|
| to do / make | będę robić / będę robił(a) | zrobię |
| to write | będę pisać / będę pisał(a) | napiszę |
| to read | będę czytać / będę czytał(a) | przeczytam |
| to eat | będę jeść / będę jadł(a) | zjem |
| to study / learn | będę się uczyć / będę się uczył(a) | nauczę się |
| to buy | będę kupować / będę kupował(a) | kupię |
Good to know
There is no perfective present in Polish: a perfective form like zrobię always points to the future, never to 'I am doing it now'. To say what you are doing at this moment, you must use the imperfective present (robię), not zrobię.
