Polski — Aspect in the imperative

In Polish commands the verb's aspect changes the message: the perfective (zrób!, napisz!) demands one completed action, while the imperfective (nie rób!, rób dalej!) fits prohibitions and ongoing processes.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Use the perfective for a single, complete result you want done now — zrób to!, napisz list!, otwórz okno! For a general process, a repeated activity, an invitation or encouragement, use the imperfective — rób dalej!, pisz codziennie!, otwieraj okna rano.

Examples

Perfective vs imperfective commands
Perfective (one action) Imperfective (process / prohibition)
Zrób to teraz! Nie rób tego!
Napisz list. Pisz codziennie.
Otwórz okno. Nie otwieraj okna.
Przeczytaj tekst. Czytaj dalej!
Zamknij drzwi. Nie zamykaj drzwi.
Powiedz mi prawdę. Nie mów tak głośno.
Kup chleb. Nie kupuj tego.

Good to know

⚠ Note

A negated command is almost always imperfective: say nie otwieraj okna, not nie otwórz okna. A perfective under nie survives only as a warning against an accidental result — uważaj, nie zbij szklanki (mind you don't break the glass).
