Français — expressing «other»: autre, un autre, d'autres
In French, «autre» means «other», but the article in front of it changes the meaning: the definite l'autre / les autres points to something already known, while the indefinite un autre / d'autres introduces something new. The pairs l'un… l'autre and les uns les autres express contrast and reciprocity.
How it works
The article decides the meaning. The definite l'autre / les autres refers to a specific, known element: «Où est l'autre chaussure ?». The indefinite un autre / d'autres introduces a new, unspecified one: «Je voudrais un autre café», «Il existe d'autres solutions». To set two elements against each other, use l'un… l'autre («L'un parle, l'autre écoute»); for a mutual action, use les uns les autres («Ils s'aident les uns les autres»).
Forms and uses
| Form | Meaning / use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| l'autre | the other (a specific, already-known one) | Où est l'autre chaussure ? |
| les autres | the others (a specific, known group) | Les autres sont déjà partis. |
| un autre / une autre | another (one more, indefinite) | Je voudrais un autre café. |
| d'autres | other / some others (indefinite plural) | Il existe d'autres solutions. |
| l'un… l'autre | one… the other (of two) | L'un parle, l'autre écoute. |
| les uns les autres | one another / each other (reciprocal) | Ils s'aident les uns les autres. |
Good to know
Before a noun, the indefinite plural is d'autres, not «des autres»: say «d'autres idées», never «des autres idées». The form «des autres» survives only when it stands for de + les autres, meaning «of the others» (la maison des autres, ‘the others' house').
