Deutsch — Infinitive with zu

Many verbs and expressions are followed by a second verb in the infinitive with zu. With separable verbs, zu slips between the prefix and the stem: aufräumen → aufzuräumen.

How it works

✓ Rule

After verbs like versuchen, anfangen or aufhören and expressions like es ist wichtig or Lust haben, the second verb stands at the end in the infinitive with zu: Ich versuche, pünktlich zu sein. Es ist wichtig, viel zu üben.

Examples

Common triggers of the infinitive with zu
Trigger Example with zu
versuchen Ich versuche, früh aufzustehen.

Good to know

⚠ Note

With separable verbs, zu is inserted between prefix and stem and written as one word: aufräumen → aufzuräumen, anrufen → anzurufen. Writing zu aufräumen is wrong. And note: after modal verbs (können, müssen, wollen …) no zu is used — Ich muss aufräumen, not zu aufräumen.
