Polski — Accusative case

The accusative marks the direct object of a verb and answers the questions kogo? co? For example: widzę kota, mam książkę.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The ending depends on gender. Masculine inanimate and neuter nouns keep the nominative (widzę dom, okno). Masculine animate nouns take the genitive form (widzę kota, studenta). Feminine nouns in -a change -a to -ę (mam kobietę, książkę).

Forms by gender

Accusative by gender
Gender / type Nominative Accusative
Masculine animate (= genitive) kot widzę kota
Masculine inanimate (= nominative) dom widzę dom
Feminine in -a → -ę kobieta widzę kobietę
Neuter (= nominative) okno widzę okno
Plural, non-virile (= nominative) koty, książki widzę koty, książki
Plural, masculine personal (= genitive) studenci widzę studentów

Good to know

⚠ Note

In the plural, only masculine personal (virile) nouns take the genitive form (widzę studentów); every other plural keeps the nominative (widzę koty, książki). A common mistake is adding -ę to feminine plurals — the -ę ending belongs only to the feminine singular (widzę książkę, but plural widzę książki).
