Deutsch — brauchen + zu
In negative or restrictive sentences, brauchen + zu + infinitive works as the negation of müssen. Du brauchst nicht zu kommen means the same as Du musst nicht kommen — there is no obligation.
How it works
Use brauchen almost only with nicht, kein…, nur or erst, followed by zu + infinitive at the end. Er braucht nicht zu warten (he need not wait), Du brauchst nur zu fragen (you only need to ask), Sie braucht kein Wort zu sagen (she need not say a word).

Good to know
In careful written German the zu is required: Du brauchst nicht zu kommen. In colloquial speech the zu is often dropped, so brauchen looks like a modal: Du brauchst nicht kommen. This is common but stigmatized in exams and formal writing — the saying goes: wer brauchen ohne zu gebraucht, braucht brauchen gar nicht zu gebrauchen.
