Français — c'est vs il est
Both mean “he/she/it is”, but c'est introduces a noun, name or stressed pronoun, while il/elle est introduces an adjective or an article-less profession or nationality.

How it works

Use c'est before a determiner + noun, a name, or a stressed pronoun: C'est un médecin; C'est Paul; C'est moi. Use il/elle est before an adjective, or a profession or nationality without an article: Il est médecin; Elle est française; Il est grand.

Good to know
⚠ Note
Use c'est to identify or emphasise, and il/elle est to describe. In the plural these become ce sont and ils/elles sont.
