Français — chaque vs chacun

Both mean "each", but chaque introduces a noun while chacun/chacune stands alone: chaque élève (each pupil) vs chacun a répondu (each one answered).

1

How it works

✓ Rule

chaque is a determiner: it always precedes a singular noun and is invariable — chaque jour, chaque maison. chacun/chacune is a pronoun: it replaces the noun and agrees in gender — Les filles ? Chacune a son livre. To refer back to a group, use chacun de / chacune de : chacun de nous, chacune des équipes.

2

Examples

Determiner chaque vs pronoun chacun/chacune
Form Use Example
chaque + nom masc. determiner before a singular masculine noun chaque jour, il court.
chaque + nom fém. same form for a feminine noun (invariable) chaque semaine, elle voyage.
chacun pronoun for a masculine group / people in general Chacun paie sa part.
chacune pronoun for a feminine group (gender agreement) Chacune a sa chambre.
chacun de nous "each of us" — points back to a named group Chacun de nous a voté.
chacune des filles "each of the girls" — chacun(e) de + les → des Chacune des filles a répondu.

Good to know

⚠ Note

Never say "chaque un" — the pronoun is one word: chacun. And chaque takes only the singular: say chaque étudiant, not chaque étudiants. The verb after chacun stays singular: Chacun sait ce qu'il veut, not Chacun savent.
