Español — Comparison of equality
To say that two things are equal, Spanish uses tan … como with adjectives and adverbs, and tanto … como with nouns and verbs: es tan alto como tú.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
Use tan + adjective/adverb + como for qualities (es tan inteligente como su hermana; corre tan rápido como yo). Use tanto/-a/-os/-as + noun + como with nouns, agreeing in gender and number (tengo tantos amigos como tú; bebe tanta agua como yo). With a verb, use verb + tanto como, invariable (estudia tanto como tú).

⚠ Note
Do not confuse tan (before an adjective/adverb) with tanto: say es tan alto, not es tanto alto. tanto agrees with its noun (tanta paciencia, tantos años), but verb + tanto como is always invariable: corre tanto como tú, never corre tantos como tú.
