Español — Irregular comparatives

Some adjectives form the comparative with their own word instead of más …. Learn mejor, peor, mayor and menor, and when each one is used.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The adjectives bueno, malo, grande and pequeño have irregular comparatives: mejor, peor, mayor, menor. They do not take más: Este libro es mejor que el otro and Mi hermana es mayor que yo.

2

The forms

Irregular and regular comparatives
Base adjective Comparative Use / meaning
bueno / bien mejor better (quality, skill)
malo / mal peor worse
grande mayor older (age); greater (importance)
pequeño menor younger (age); lesser (amount)
grande más grande bigger (physical size)
pequeño más pequeño smaller (physical size)
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

Never say más mejor or más peor — mejor and peor are already comparatives. For physical size use más grande and más pequeño, not mayor or menor. Más bueno and más malo refer only to character: Es más bueno que el pan.
