Español — compound conditional

The compound conditional expresses a hypothetical result in the past: habría + past participle, as in Yo habría ido.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

condicional compuesto = habría (conditional of haber) + participle: habría hablado, habrías comido… It names the result of a past unreal condition — the apodosis of type-3 conditionals: Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado.

2

Conjugation

habría + participio (ir)
Person Form Meaning
yo habría ido I would have gone
tú habrías ido you would have gone
él / ella habría ido he/she would have gone
nosotros habríamos ido we would have gone
vosotros habríais ido you (pl.) would have gone
ellos / ellas habrían ido they would have gone
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

The condition uses the pluperfect subjunctive, not another conditional: say Si hubiera sabido, habría venido — never Si habría sabido. In everyday speech many speakers replace the apodosis with the same subjunctive: Si hubiera sabido, hubiera venido.
