Español — Cause connectors
Spanish has several ways to introduce a cause. The choice depends on register and word order: porque follows the main clause, como opens the sentence, and a causa de or por take a noun or an infinitive.
How it works
porque introduces the cause after the main clause: No fui porque estaba cansado. To place the cause first, use como: Como estaba cansado, no fui. The formal ya que, puesto que and dado que present a cause already known to both speakers: Puesto que llueve, quédate. gracias a que marks a positive cause, while a causa de and por take a noun or infinitive: Cerró a causa de la crisis; La multaron por llegar tarde.

Good to know
como expresses cause only at the start of the sentence; elsewhere it means 'as/like'. a causa de is followed by a noun, never a conjugated verb — for that use porque or por. Don't confuse porque (because) with the question ¿por qué? and the noun el porqué.
