Italiano — subjunctive triggers

The congiuntivo appears in the subordinate clause after che, when the main verb expresses opinion, will, doubt or emotion, and after certain conjunctions.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Verbs of opinion or doubt (penso/credo che), of will (voglio che), impersonal expressions (è necessario/importante che) and conjunctions like benché or prima che introduce the congiuntivo: Penso che sia tardi, Voglio che tu venga, È necessario che parta.

2

Triggers and examples

trigger → example → type
Trigger Example Type
Penso che Penso che sia tardi. opinion
Credo che Credo che abbiano ragione. belief / doubt
Voglio che Voglio che tu venga. will / wish
È necessario che È necessario che parta subito. impersonal necessity
È importante che È importante che tu studi. impersonal judgement
Benché Benché sia stanco, esce. concessive conjunction
Prima che Prima che parta, salutalo. temporal conjunction
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

The congiuntivo needs two different subjects. With the same subject, use the infinitive: Voglio venire (not Voglio che io venga). Also, so che (I know that) takes the indicative — certainty does not trigger the congiuntivo: So che è tardi.
