Deutsch — the perfect tense

The everyday past tense of spoken German: haben or sein + the past participle, which jumps to the end of the sentence.

1

How to build the perfect

✓ Rule

Perfekt = haben or sein in position 2 + the past participle at the end. Regular participle: ge- + stem + -t (machen → gemacht). Example: Ich habe Fußball gespielt.

2

haben or sein?

Choosing the auxiliary
Auxiliary When Example
haben most verbs (all transitive) Ich habe gegessen.
sein motion (gehen, fahren) and change of state (aufstehen) Ich bin gegangen.
sein always: the verbs sein and bleiben Ich bin gewesen.
3

Irregular participles

⚠ Note

Many common verbs are irregular — often ge- + …-en with a vowel change. Learn them as a set: gehen → gegangen, sein → gewesen, essen → gegessen, trinken → getrunken, sehen → gesehen.
