Polski — Movable past-tense endings
In the Polish past tense the personal endings -em / -eś / -śmy / -ście are not welded to the verb. They can detach and hop onto an earlier word — a question word, a pronoun, or a conjunction — as in gdzieś ty był, myśmy to zrobili, coście kupili.
How it works
The endings -(e)m, -(e)ś, -śmy, -ście carry the person and number; the participle (był, zrobił, kupili) carries only gender. Because the person is in the ending, that ending can slide onto an earlier stressed word. When it moves, the verb drops to its bare third-person form: gdzie ty byłeś → gdzieś ty był; my to zrobiliśmy → myśmy to zrobili; co kupiliście → coście kupili.
Examples
| Ending / person | Ending on the verb | Ending moved forward |
|---|---|---|
| -(e)m — ja (1 sg) | ja to zrobiłem | jam to zrobił |
| -(e)ś — ty (2 sg) | gdzie ty byłeś | gdzieś ty był |
| -(e)ś — ty (2 sg) | dlaczego przyszedłeś | dlaczegoś przyszedł |
| -śmy — my (1 pl) | my to zrobiliśmy | myśmy to zrobili |
| -ście — wy (2 pl) | co kupiliście | coście kupili |
| -ście — wy (2 pl) | gdzie byliście | gdzieście byli |
Good to know
Write the ending only once. If you move it forward, strip it from the verb: gdzieś ty był, not gdzieś ty byłeś. This shift is stylistically marked — expressive, colloquial, or literary — and never obligatory; the plain gdzie ty byłeś is always correct. After aby/żeby the ending attaches obligatorily, and after że it may attach: myślę, że przyszedłem → wiem, żeś przyszedł; chcę, żebyś przyszedł.
