English — present tense (Present Simple)

The simplest English tense: the base verb everywhere, with one twist — add -s in the third person singular.

1

Personal endings

✓ Rule

Use the base form for I, you, we and they; add -s only for he, she, it. Example: I work, you work — but he works, she works.

2

Conjugation: work

work — present tense
Person Form
I work
you work
he/she/it works
we work
you (pl.) work
they work
3

Other groups and exceptions

⚠ Note

Spelling of the -s form: go → goes, do → does, watch → watches; a consonant + y becomes -ies: study → studies. For questions and negatives, use do/does: Does she work? — She doesn't work.
