Français — Verb + preposition + object
Many French verbs need a fixed preposition — à or de — before their object. The preposition belongs to the verb: penser à, parler de, jouer à/de. Learn each verb together with its preposition.
How it works
The preposition is fixed by the verb, not by meaning, and can never be dropped. Verbs like penser à and s'intéresser à take à; parler de and se souvenir de take de. With jouer, the choice depends on the object: jouer à for games and sports (Ils jouent au football), jouer de for musical instruments (Je joue du piano).
Examples
| Verb + preposition | Example | Meaning / use |
|---|---|---|
| penser à | Je pense à mes vacances. | to think about sb/sth |
| s'intéresser à | Elle s'intéresse à la musique. | to be interested in sth |
| parler de | Nous parlons de politique. | to talk about sth |
| se souvenir de | Tu te souviens de moi ? | to remember sb/sth |
| jouer à | Ils jouent au football. | to play a game / sport |
| jouer de | Je joue du piano. | to play a musical instrument |
Good to know
à and de contract with the definite article: à + le = au, à + les = aux; de + le = du, de + les = des — so jouer à + le football = jouer au football, jouer de + le piano = jouer du piano. Also keep penser à (to have in mind: Je pense à toi) apart from penser de (to have an opinion: Que penses-tu de ce film ?).
