Deutsch — Strong verb ablaut
Strong verbs change their stem vowel across the three principal parts. Instead of adding -te, forms like fahren – fuhr – gefahren shift the vowel itself, and this vowel pattern (the ablaut) has to be memorized verb by verb.
How it works
Every strong verb has three principal parts (Stammformen): Infinitiv, Präteritum and Partizip II. The past tense drops any ending and changes the vowel — ich fahre → ich fuhr, ich sehe → ich sah — and the Partizip II ends in -en, not -t: gefahren, gesehen.
Principal parts
| Infinitiv | Präteritum | Partizip II |
|---|---|---|
| fahren | fuhr | gefahren |
| sehen | sah | gesehen |
| geben | gab | gegeben |
| nehmen | nahm | genommen |
| lesen | las | gelesen |
| sprechen | sprach | gesprochen |
| helfen | half | geholfen |
| finden | fand | gefunden |
Good to know
Many e-stem verbs also change the vowel in the present tense, but only in the du and er/sie/es forms: sehen → du siehst, er sieht; geben → du gibst, er gibt; nehmen → du nimmst, er nimmt. The ich and plural forms keep the plain stem: ich sehe, wir sehen. Watch too that fahren takes an a → ä umlaut in the present (du fährst, er fährt), not e → i.
