Deutsch — Mixed (irregular) verbs

A small group of German verbs — the Mischverben — combine weak endings with a stem-vowel change like strong verbs: bringen – brachte – gebracht.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Mixed verbs take the weak past endings -te (Präteritum) and -t (Partizip II), but also change the stem vowel like strong verbs: bringen – brachte – gebracht, denken – dachte – gedacht, kennen – kannte – gekannt, wissen – wusste – gewusst.

The four main mixed verbs

Infinitive, Präteritum, Partizip II and meaning
Infinitive · Präteritum · Partizip II Meaning
bringen – brachte – gebracht to bring
denken – dachte – gedacht to think
kennen – kannte – gekannt to know (be familiar with)
wissen – wusste – gewusst to know (a fact)
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

wissen is also irregular in the present singular: ich weiß, du weißt, er/sie/es weiß — the vowel shifts to ei and there is no -t in the 3rd person. The plural is regular: wir wissen, ihr wisst, sie wissen.
