Italiano — Irregular present
Some of the most frequent Italian verbs are irregular in the present indicative. Their stem changes, so they must be memorized: andare, venire, fare, dire, uscire, dare, stare, plus the modal verbs dovere, potere, volere and sapere.
How it works
These verbs take the regular present endings but with an altered stem. For instance: vado a casa, faccio colazione, dico la verità, esco stasera. The modal verbs dovere, potere and volere are followed by an infinitive: voglio dormire, posso venire, devo studiare.

Good to know
The three verbs not shown above are also irregular: dovere (devo, devi, deve, dobbiamo, dovete, devono), volere (voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono) and sapere (so, sai, sa, sappiamo, sapete, sanno). Watch the written accent: dà 'he/she gives' keeps it to differ from the preposition da, and può 'he/she can' is always written with the accent.
