Deutsch — Inseparable verbs

Some German prefixes are welded to the verb and never split off. With be-, emp-, ent-, er-, ge-, miss-, ver- and zer- the prefix stays attached in every position: verkaufen, ich verkaufe das Auto.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The inseparable prefix never moves to the end of the clause and is unstressed. In the Partizip II these verbs take no ge-: verkaufen becomes verkauft (ich habe das Auto verkauft), bezahlen becomes bezahlt.

Examples

The eight inseparable prefixes and their Partizip II (no ge-)
Prefix Infinitive → Partizip II Meaning
be- bezahlen → bezahlt to pay
emp- empfehlen → empfohlen to recommend
ent- entscheiden → entschieden to decide
er- erklären → erklärt to explain
ge- gehören → gehört to belong
miss- missverstehen → missverstanden to misunderstand
ver- verkaufen → verkauft to sell
zer- zerstören → zerstört to destroy

Good to know

⚠ Note

A few prefixes (durch-, über-, um-, unter-, wider-, wieder-) can be either separable or inseparable, changing the meaning: übersetzen (to translate, inseparable) versus über|setzen (to ferry across, separable). Stress tells them apart — the inseparable one is unstressed.
