Italiano — Pronominal verbs

Italian pronominal verbs attach one or two fixed clitic pronouns to a verb, changing its meaning: andarsene (to leave), farcela (to manage), cavarsela (to get by), prendersela (to take offence).

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The clitics come before the finite verb and shift with the person: for andarsene you say me ne vado, te ne vai, se ne va, ce ne andiamo, ve ne andate, se ne vanno — ne and la stay fixed while the reflexive part (me, te, se, ce, ve) matches the subject.

Examples

Conjugation and agreement of common pronominal verbs
Verb Present Passato prossimo
andarsene Me ne vado Me ne sono andato/a
farcela Ce la faccio Ce l'ho fatta
cavarsela Me la cavo Me la sono cavata
prendersela Se la prende Se l'è presa

Good to know

⚠ Note

Agreement is the trap in compound tenses. Verbs with essere like andarsene agree with the subject: Maria se n'è andata. The -la verbs use avere, yet the participle still agrees with the feminine la: ce l'ho fatta, me la sono cavata, se l'è presa — never ce l'ho fatto.
