Deutsch — Separable verbs
German has many verbs with a stressed, detachable prefix. In a main clause the prefix splits off and jumps to the end. Verbs like aufstehen, einkaufen and mitkommen work this way.

How it works
✓ Rule
In a main clause the separable prefix moves to the end of the clause: aufstehen becomes Ich stehe früh auf. In the Partizip II, -ge- is inserted between the prefix and the stem: aufgestanden, eingekauft, mitgekommen.

⚠ Note
In a zu-infinitive the zu goes inside the verb, between prefix and stem: aufzustehen, einzukaufen — never zu aufstehen. Watch out for inseparable prefixes (be-, ge-, er-, ver-, ent-, emp-, zer-): they are unstressed, never split off, and take no -ge- in the Partizip (besuchen → besucht).
