Polski — Prefixed verbs of motion

Polish builds a whole family of motion verbs from a single base like iść (to go). A directional prefix (przy-, wy-, w-, do-, od-, ob-, prze-) turns przyjść, wyjść, wejść, dojść, odejść, obejść, przejść into distinct actions. The prefix sets the direction; the following preposition confirms it: wejść do domu, wyjść z domu.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The prefix carries the direction of movement relative to a point: przy- = arrival (przyjść = come here), w-/we- = motion inward (wejść = go in), wy- = motion outward (wyjść = go out), do- = reaching a goal (dojść = get as far as), od- = moving away (odejść = leave), ob- = going around (obejść = walk around), prze- = crossing through (przejść = pass across). The preposition then matches the direction: wejść do (into), wyjść z (out of), przejść przez (across).

Good to know

⚠ Note

The prefix and the preposition must agree: say wejść do domu, not wejść w domu, and wyjść z domu, not wyjść od domu. All these prefixed forms are perfective (one completed act); the imperfective partners come from a different stem — wchodzić, wychodzić, dochodzić, odchodzić, obchodzić, przechodzić — used for repeated or ongoing motion.
