Polski — czy vs jeśli
Both czy and jeśli often correspond to English 'if', but they are not interchangeable. czy introduces yes-no questions (direct or embedded: 'whether'); jeśli / jeżeli introduces a condition ('if… then').
How it works
Use czy for a yes-no question, including one embedded after verbs like pytać, wiedzieć, sprawdzić: Czy masz czas? and Pytam, czy masz czas. Use jeśli (or the fuller jeżeli) only for a condition that must be met: Jeśli masz czas, zadzwoń. Swapping them is ungrammatical: *Pytam, jeśli masz czas is wrong.
Examples
| Polish | Function |
|---|---|
| Czy masz czas? | Direct yes-no question: 'Do you have time?' |
| Pytam, czy masz czas. | Embedded question after pytać: 'I'm asking whether you have time.' |
| Nie wiem, czy przyjdzie. | Embedded question after wiedzieć: 'I don't know whether he'll come.' |
| Jeśli masz czas, zadzwoń. | Condition: 'If you have time, call.' |
| Jeżeli będzie padać, zostaniemy w domu. | Condition (fuller jeżeli): 'If it rains, we'll stay home.' |
| Sprawdź, czy drzwi są zamknięte. | Embedded question after sprawdzić: 'Check whether the door is locked.' |
Good to know
English 'if' hides the distinction, so learners often say *Pytam, jeśli masz czas — wrong. Test it: if you could rephrase with 'whether', use czy (Nie wiem, czy przyjdzie); if it states a condition ('if… then'), use jeśli / jeżeli. jeżeli is the fuller, slightly more formal variant of jeśli; they are otherwise interchangeable.
