Polski — Dates and years
In Polish the day is an ordinal number in the genitive, followed by the month in the genitive: pierwszego maja (1 May). The year is a compound ordinal, and to say that something happens in a given year you use w with the locative: w dwa tysiące dwudziestym roku (in 2020).
How it works
Build a date from an ordinal day in the genitive plus the month in the genitive: pierwszego maja, trzeciego marca. In a full date the year is genitive too: trzeciego marca dwa tysiące dwudziestego roku. To locate an event in a year, use w + locative: w dwa tysiące dwudziestym roku. Ask którego (dzisiaj mamy)? for the day and w którym roku? for the year.
Examples
| Element | Example (Polish) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Day (ordinal, genitive) | pierwszego maja | 1 May |
| Day + month | dwudziestego siódmego lipca | 27 July |
| Full date (with year) | trzeciego marca dwa tysiące dwudziestego roku | 3 March 2020 |
| Year — “in” (w + locative) | w dwa tysiące dwudziestym roku | in 2020 |
| Year (20th century) | w tysiąc dziewięćset osiemdziesiątym dziewiątym roku | in 1989 |
| Question — date | którego dzisiaj mamy? | what’s the date today? |
| Question — year | w którym roku? | in which year? |
Good to know
The tens-and-units part of the year (the number below 100) is the ordinal and carries the case ending, so when it has two words both inflect (w tysiąc dziewięćset osiemdziesiątym dziewiątym roku); the thousands and hundreds stay as cardinals: w dwa tysiące dwudziestym roku, not *w dwutysięcznym dwudziestym roku. And ask w którym roku?, not w jakim roku?
