Français — 'de' after negation and quantity

In the negative, the indefinite or partitive article becomes de: J'ai une voiture → Je n'ai pas de voiture. The same de appears after expressions of quantity: beaucoup de, trop de, un kilo de — with no article on the following noun.

How it works

✓ Rule

After pas, plus, jamais and after a quantity word (beaucoup, trop, assez, un kilo…), un/une/du/de la/des is replaced by plain de (de l' / d' before a vowel): Il n'y a plus de pain; J'ai assez d'argent; un kilo de pommes.

⚠ Note

Two exceptions keep the full article. After the verb être the article stays: Ce n'est pas un problème (not de). And la plupart and bien des keep des: la plupart des gens, bien des fois.
