Español — Reporting verbs
Four verbs cover reporting speech in Spanish: decir (say/tell), contar (narrate), preguntar (ask a question) and pedir (request). With decir que, the mood of the following verb changes the meaning: indicative reports a fact, subjunctive gives an order.
How it works
Choose the verb by the type of message: decir reports a statement (Dice que viene), contar narrates events (Me contó su viaje), preguntar introduces a question (Me preguntó la hora), and pedir requests an action or object (Me pidió el libro). Note that preguntar seeks information while pedir seeks something to be given or done.
Examples
| Verb / structure | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| decir | report a statement (say / tell) | Dice que está cansado. |
| contar | narrate events or a story | Me contó cómo se conocieron. |
| preguntar | ask a question (seek information) | Me preguntó si tenía tiempo. |
| pedir | request an action or object | Me pidió que le ayudara. |
| decir que + indicativo | reported fact / statement | Dice que estudias mucho. |
| decir que + subjuntivo | order / instruction to someone | Dice que estudies más. |
Good to know
The same verb decir splits by mood: Dice que viene reports that he is coming (fact, indicative), but Dice que vengas tells you to come (order, subjunctive). Also don't confuse preguntar with pedir: use preguntar por alguien to ask about a person (Preguntó por ti = he asked about you), and pedir to request a thing (Pidió un café). Preguntar una pregunta is redundant — say hacer una pregunta.
