Español — expressing duration
Spanish uses the present tense with hace… que, desde hace, desde and llevar to say how long something has been going on. In Vivo aquí desde hace dos años the action still continues now.

How it works
✓ Rule
Keep the verb in the present. You can say Hace dos años que vivo aquí or, with the order reversed, Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. Use desde + a starting point (Vivo aquí desde 2020) and llevar + time for the same idea: Llevo dos años aquí, or with a gerund, Llevo dos años viviendo aquí.

Examples
| Structure | Example | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Hace + tiempo + que + presente | Hace dos años que vivo aquí. | Duration continuing up to now |
| Presente + desde hace + tiempo | Vivo aquí desde hace dos años. | Same idea, order reversed |
| Presente + desde + punto | Vivo aquí desde 2020. | A specific starting point |
| Llevar + tiempo | Llevo dos años aquí. | Duration with the verb llevar |
| Llevar + tiempo + gerundio | Llevo dos años viviendo aquí. | Ongoing action over that time |
| ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que…? | ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que estudias español? | Asking how long |

⚠ Note
Don't confuse desde and desde hace. Use desde + a point (desde 2020, desde el lunes) and desde hace + a length of time (desde hace dos años). Note the difference from English: Spanish keeps the present tense, so say Vivo aquí desde hace dos años, not a past tense.
