Deutsch — Indefinite determiners
The determiners alle, beide, einige, manche, mehrere, viele and wenige express quantity before plural nouns and control the ending of any adjective that follows.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
alle and beide take the weak adjective ending -en (alle neuen Bücher, beide großen Häuser). After einige, manche, mehrere, viele and wenige the adjective takes the strong ending -e in the nominative and accusative plural (viele nette Leute, einige neue Ideen).
2
Examples
| Determiner | Meaning | Example (nom. pl.) |
|---|---|---|
| alle | all | alle neuen Bücher |
| beide | both | beide großen Häuser |
| einige | some, a few | einige neue Ideen |
| manche | some, certain | manche alte Freunde |
| mehrere | several | mehrere neue Autos |
| viele | many | viele nette Leute |
| wenige | few | wenige gute Bücher |

Good to know
⚠ Note
In the dative plural all these adjectives end in -en: mit vielen netten Leuten, nach einigen langen Tagen. Common mistake: after alle the ending is not -e but -en — alle neuen Studenten, not alle neue Studenten.
