Français — “en” vs “à” with means of transport
To say how you travel, French uses en for enclosed vehicles you sit inside (en voiture, en train, en avion) and à for means you sit on or that use your own body (à pied, à vélo, à cheval).

How it works
✓ Rule
Use en + no article when you get inside the vehicle: en voiture, en train, en avion, en bus, en métro, en bateau. Use à when you sit astride the vehicle or move under your own power: à pied, à vélo, à moto, à cheval, à trottinette.

⚠ Note
The line blurs in modern usage: à moto and en moto, à vélo and en vélo are both heard, though à stays the reference form. But en pied does not exist — walking is always à pied.
