Italiano — essere and avere
The two essential Italian verbs. Both irregular, both build the passato prossimo (ho mangiato, sono andato).
1
essere — to be
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| io | sono |
| tu | sei |
| lui/lei | è |
| noi | siamo |
| voi | siete |
| loro | sono |
2
avere — to have
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| io | ho |
| tu | hai |
| lui/lei | ha |
| noi | abbiamo |
| voi | avete |
| loro | hanno |
✓ Rule
essere and avere are the auxiliaries of the passato prossimo: most verbs use avere (ho finito), verbs of movement/change use essere (sono partito) — then the participle agrees (è partita).
