Español — Reported commands

To report an order or request, Spanish does not keep the imperative. It uses a verb like decir, pedir, ordenar or aconsejar followed by que and the subjunctive: ¡Sal! becomes Me dijo que saliera.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The pattern is [verb of ordering] + que + subjunctive. When the main verb is in the past (dijo, pidió, ordenó), the subjunctive shifts to the imperfect: Ordenó que esperáramos. When the main verb is present, the present subjunctive is used: Nos pide que esperemos.

Examples

From imperative to reported command
Direct order Reported command
¡Sal de aquí! Me dijo que saliera de allí.
Cierra la puerta. Le pedí que cerrara la puerta.
Esperad fuera. Nos ordenó que esperáramos fuera.
No llegues tarde. Te aconsejo que no llegues tarde.
Llámame mañana. Me pide que la llame mañana.
Tened cuidado. El médico les dijo que tuvieran cuidado.

Good to know

⚠ Note

Do not keep the original imperative form. Me dijo que sal is wrong; the correct version is Me dijo que saliera. Also watch the pronouns: an order given to me is reported with que + subjunctive about the same person, so ¡Ayúdame! becomes Me pidió que la ayudara.
