Español — Reported questions
To report a question, you don't quote it directly; you introduce it with a verb like preguntar and adapt the tense, pronouns and place-and-time words.
1
How it works
✓ Rule
For a yes/no question, use preguntar si: ¿Vienes? → Me preguntó si venía. For a wh-question, keep the question word (qué, dónde, cuándo, quién, cómo, por qué): ¿Dónde vives? → Me preguntó dónde vivía. Verb tenses, pronouns and words of time and place shift just as in reported statements.

Examples
| Direct question | Reported question | Change |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Estudias aquí? | Me preguntó si estudiaba allí. | Yes/no question with si; aquí→allí; present→imperfect |
| ¿Qué haces? | Me preguntó qué hacía. | Wh-word qué kept; present→imperfect |
| ¿Dónde vives? | Me preguntó dónde vivía. | Wh-word dónde kept; present→imperfect |
| ¿Cuándo vuelves? | Me preguntó cuándo volvía. | Wh-word cuándo kept; present→imperfect |
| ¿Por qué me llamas? | Me preguntó por qué la llamaba. | Pronoun me→la; por qué kept |
| ¿Quieres venir? | Me preguntó si quería ir. | Yes/no with si; venir→ir; present→imperfect |

⚠ Note
There is no inversion and no question marks in the reported clause: Me preguntó cómo me llamaba, not Me preguntó cómo me llamo yo. In speech an extra que often appears (Me preguntó que si venía), but leave it out in writing.
