Français — être and avoir
The two pillars of French. Both are irregular and both build the passé composé (j'ai mangé, je suis allé).
1
être — to be
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| je | suis |
| tu | es |
| il/elle | est |
| nous | sommes |
| vous | êtes |
| ils/elles | sont |
2
avoir — to have
| Person | Form |
|---|---|
| j' | ai |
| tu | as |
| il/elle | a |
| nous | avons |
| vous | avez |
| ils/elles | ont |
✓ Rule
être and avoir are also the auxiliaries of the passé composé: most verbs use avoir (j'ai fini), verbs of movement/change use être (je suis parti) — then the participle agrees (elle est partie).
