Français — Futur antérieur

The futur antérieur expresses an action that will already be completed before another future moment: quand j'aurai fini, je sortirai.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Form it with the auxiliary avoir or être in the simple future (aurai, serai…) plus the past participle: j'aurai fini, tu seras parti(e). As in the passé composé, être is used with reflexive verbs and a fixed set of motion/state verbs, and its participle agrees with the subject.

2

Examples

Futur antérieur: finir (avoir) vs partir (être)
Person with avoir with être
je j'aurai fini je serai parti(e)
tu tu auras fini tu seras parti(e)
il / elle il aura fini elle sera partie
nous nous aurons fini nous serons parti(e)s
vous vous aurez fini vous serez parti(e)s
ils / elles ils auront fini elles seront parties

Good to know

⚠ Note

After quand, dès que, lorsque, après que, French uses the futur antérieur for the earlier action and the simple future for the later one: quand j'aurai fini, je t'appellerai. English uses the present perfect there ("when I have finished"), so avoid saying quand j'ai fini for a future event.
