Deutsch — genitive attribute

The genitive links two nouns to show possession or belonging. The genitive noun follows the noun it describes: das Auto meines Vaters, die Farbe des Autos. In everyday speech, von + dative is often used instead.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Masculine and neuter nouns take the article des and add -s or -es to the noun: das Auto meines Vaters, die Farbe des Autos. Feminine and plural nouns use der with no ending: das Büro der Lehrerin, die Spielsachen der Kinder. Proper names simply add -s and stand in front: Annas Buch, Peters Auto.

2

Examples

Genitive attribute by type
Type / form Genitive form Example
maskulin (der → des …-s) des Vaters das Auto meines Vaters
neutrum (das → des …-s) des Autos die Farbe des Autos

Eigenname (+ -s) Annas Annas Buch
von + Dativ (Alternative) von meinem Vater das Auto von meinem Vater
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

In spoken German the genitive is often replaced by von + dative: das Auto von meinem Vater instead of das Auto meines Vaters. Proper names ending in -s, -ss, -ß, -tz, -z or -x add no extra -s but an apostrophe: Max' Buch, Hans' Auto.
