Deutsch — gern and its comparison

With gern(e) you say that you like doing something. It comes after the verb and has an irregular comparison: gern – lieber – am liebsten.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

gern(e) comes directly after the conjugated verb: Ich schwimme gern. The comparison is irregular — gern – lieber – am liebsten. Use lieber for what you prefer: Ich trinke lieber Tee. Use am liebsten for what you like most: Am liebsten trinke ich Wasser.

2

Examples

gern – lieber – am liebsten in use
Form Meaning / use Example
gern Positive — like doing something Ich lese gern.
gerne Same as gern (longer variant) Ich trinke gerne Kaffee.
lieber Comparative — prefer / rather Ich trinke lieber Tee.

Good to know

⚠ Note

gern is an adverb, not an adjective — it is never declined (not 'ein gerner Tag'). The superlative is always am liebsten, never just liebsten. Don't confuse lieber with the adjective lieb: Ich trinke lieber Tee (preference), but ein lieber Mensch (kind).
