Français — Telling the time

To ask the time say Quelle heure est-il ?; to answer, start with Il est. In everyday speech the hour is expressed with et quart, et demie and moins le quart, while the 24-hour clock is used for schedules and official contexts.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

Say Il est + number + heure(s). Add et quart for +15, et demie for +30, and moins le quart for the quarter before the next hour: Il est deux heures et quart, Il est trois heures et demie, Il est cinq heures moins le quart. Use midi for 12:00 and minuit for 00:00 (with et demi, no -e: midi et demi).

Examples

Colloquial time next to the official 24-hour form
Time Colloquial (spoken) Official 24 h
13:00 Il est une heure. Il est treize heures.
14:15 Il est deux heures et quart. Il est quatorze heures quinze.
15:30 Il est trois heures et demie. Il est quinze heures trente.
16:45 Il est cinq heures moins le quart. Il est seize heures quarante-cinq.
18:10 Il est six heures dix. Il est dix-huit heures dix.
12:00 Il est midi. Il est douze heures.
00:30 Il est minuit et demi. Il est zéro heure trente.

Good to know

⚠ Note

heure is always feminine, so quart and demie agree accordingly: deux heures et demie. But after the masculine midi and minuit you write demi without -e: midi et demi, minuit et demi. et quart, et demie and moins le quart belong to the 12-hour spoken clock; never mix them with 24-hour numbers (say dix-huit heures trente, not dix-huit heures et demie).
