Español — verbs like gustar

With gustar, what is liked works as the subject and the person is an indirect object: Me gusta el café.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

The verb agrees with the thing liked, not the person: singular or infinitive takes gusta (Me gusta el café), plural takes gustan (Me gustan los libros). The pattern is: (a mí) me / (a ti) te / (a él) le / (a nosotros) nos / (a vosotros) os / (a ellos) les + gusta / gustan.

Examples

Indirect-object pronoun and example
Pronoun Example
me Me gusta el café.
te Te gustan los perros.
le Le gusta bailar.
nos Nos gusta el cine.
les Les gustan las flores.
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

gusta is also followed by an infinitive: Me gusta leer. Add "a + noun/pronoun" to clarify or emphasise the person: A Juan le gusta… The same pattern applies to encantar, doler, interesar, parecer, molestar and faltar.
