Français — falloir: il faut

The impersonal verb falloir exists only in the third person (il faut) and expresses necessity or obligation: Il faut partir.

Use il faut + noun (Il faut du temps), il faut + infinitive for a general obligation (Il faut réserver), and il faut que + subjunctive when the obligation targets a specific person (Il faut que tu réserves).

Good to know

⚠ Note

Il ne faut pas means "must not", not "don't have to": Il ne faut pas fumer forbids smoking. To say something is not required, use Tu n'es pas obligé de or Ce n'est pas la peine de.
