Polski — active adjectival participle
The active adjectival participle in -ący (czytający, biegnący, śpiący) describes a noun that is performing an action right now. Formed only from imperfective verbs, it agrees with the noun like an adjective and often replaces a który clause.
How it works
Take the 3rd person plural present tense (oni czytają, oni biegną, oni śpią) and add -cy: czytają → czytający, biegną → biegnący, śpią → śpiący. The participle then takes adjective endings and agrees in gender, number and case: czytający chłopiec, czytająca dziewczyna, czytające dzieci; a stojący nad rzeką means "who is standing by the river".
Examples
| Verb | 3rd pers. pl. → participle | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| czytać | czytają → czytający | reading |
| biec / biegnąć | biegną → biegnący | running |
| spać | śpią → śpiący | sleeping |
| pisać | piszą → piszący | writing |
| iść | idą → idący | going, walking |
| śpiewać | śpiewają → śpiewający | singing |
Good to know
The participle exists only for imperfective verbs — there is no *przeczytający from perfective przeczytać. It also describes a simultaneous action, so it cannot be negated for a completed one; say kobieta czytająca gazetę ("the woman reading the newspaper"), but for the past use a który clause: kobieta, która przeczytała gazetę.
