Polski — Anterior adverbial participle

The anterior adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy uprzedni) ends in -wszy/-łszy and names an action completed before the action of the main verb, e.g. Przeczytawszy list, wyszedł.

1

How it works

✓ Rule

It is formed only from perfective verbs: add -wszy to a stem ending in a vowel (przeczytać → przeczytawszy) and -łszy to a stem ending in a consonant (zjeść → zjadłszy, przyjść → przyszedłszy). The participle is indeclinable and refers to the same subject as the main verb.

Examples

Perfective verb → anterior participle
Perfective verb Participle Meaning
przeczytać przeczytawszy having read
napisać napisawszy having written
zjeść zjadłszy having eaten
wrócić wróciwszy having returned
przyjść przyszedłszy having arrived / come
usiąść usiadłszy having sat down
3

Good to know

⚠ Note

It is formal and literary. A frequent mistake is building it from an imperfective verb — *czytawszy is wrong (use przeczytawszy). The subject must be the same in both clauses: Zjadłszy obiad, poszedł spać — the one who ate is the one who went to sleep.
