Polski — Contemporary adverbial participle
The contemporary adverbial participle ends in -ąc (czytając, idąc, robiąc). It describes an action happening at the same time as the main verb and sharing the same subject. The form never changes for gender, number, or person.
How it works
Form it from an imperfective verb: take the 3rd person plural present (czytają, idą, robią) and replace -ą with -ąc → czytając, idąc, robiąc. Both actions must have one and the same subject: Czytając książkę, piję kawę ('While reading a book, I drink coffee') — I am the one who both reads and drinks.
Examples
| Verb (infinitive → 3rd pl.) | Adverbial participle -ąc |
|---|---|
| czytać → czytają | czytając |
| iść → idą | idąc |
| robić → robią | robiąc |
| mówić → mówią | mówiąc |
| pisać → piszą | pisząc |
| być → są | będąc |
| wracać → wracają | wracając |
Good to know
The participle is formed only from imperfective verbs — perfective verbs take the anterior participle in -wszy/-łszy instead. Keep the subject identical: Wracając do domu, spotkałem sąsiada is correct, but if the two actions have different subjects the sentence is faulty (a 'dangling participle'), e.g. the notorious Jadąc pociągiem, przyszła mi do głowy pewna myśl.
